Eastern Bluebirds, a 6 month journaling project

In 2021, from March to August, a good friend of mine from Wilmington, North Carolina, had a grand time filming a pair of bluebirds and their 4 broods.. She placed a small motion sensitive camera inside the nest box, and recorded hours of the bird’s activity. Not only did she capture video (and still photos) inside and outside of the nest box, she narrated all of the big events such as nest building, egg laying and incubation. And she took video of the newly hatched chicks, feeding time (which was all the time),

all the way up until the fledglings flew.

My friend generously shared all of her video clips and still photos with me, as events unfolded. Knowing I wanted to ”nature journal” as much as possible, I began sketching the birds from the live videos. The resulting sketches (and there were so many) were such fun to create, and when added to the narration and a few researched facts about Eastern Bluebirds, I knew my project had turned into a book! This book. I hope you enjoy.

  2. Hi Barb! Your Bluebird book is gorgeous! I am looking forward to reading more of your posts. I found you through Anne Butera’s Blog, we both commented on her latest post. I am so glad I found your blog and that you nature journal – I’m a hobby nature journaler, too in WA state! We’ll be visiting New Mexico (Santa Fe to Carlsbad areas) in March and looking forward to it. I’m sharing my blog address here in hopes you’ll find some inspiration there, too. Happy journaling! https://iamchasingbutterflies.wordpress.com/ and Instagram @iamchasingbutterflies

      1. Thank you, yes, I am Karen. I look forward to NM, I’ll be geeking out with the desert plants mostly, but I’d love to see some different birds and animals/insects. WA is very beautiful, indeed, so green, full of wildlife and the ocean is an endless source of wonder (we are kayakers). So glad we connected!

This is so awesomely amazing, Barb! I wondered what was going on inside my bluebird box last year and now I have an idea. Your pictures are exquisite, I especially like the baby with mouth open and the last one. Your poem is precious. Oh to have your talent!

    1. Oh, hahahahah! Apologies for the ear song, but at least it’s a fun one! Thanks so so much for the lovely comments on the bluebird book. My friend was surprised and delighted. I just got a report from her that Sky and Blue have mates, built their first nest and laid at least one egg! That was a few days ago, so I’ll bet there’s at least 4 eggs by now! This was a wonderful project!

I get confused with these emails sometimes…can’t tell if it is from you asking me a question. Or you responding to someone else…..but either way you can do whatever you want with your beautiful book!
