Wait For It!

Spring is on the Way

February 10, 2026

One of my virtues is impatience ……. when it comes to Spring ….. and its arrival ….. finally.

Admittedly, winter has its perks. After a long, hot summer and fall, winter’s crisp air is a mood lifter, and cooler air temps allow for cozy sleeping under piles of blankets. Longer nights mean my favorite constellations hang in the sky longer, and somehow the moon always seems brighter and friendlier. In New Mexico, winter hiking about is more casual without having to watch every step for rattlesnakes, and certainly any snowfall we’ve been fortunate enough to get helps recharge water tables, tempers our risk of wildfire, and is absolutely beautiful to watch while falling.

But ….. since Winter Solstice and with daytime hours lengthening, I’m ready for Spring. And the closer it gets, my impatience for the upcoming change in season is obvious. My nature journal, pencils and 10x magnifying loop are packed and ready, each daily hike begins by plucking from a yucca one of last year’s flower stalks to poke the ground for signs of growth, and I’m anxious to snap photos of any passing migrating bird or resident roadrunner in search of a perfect nesting spot.

Meanwhile, I’m thankful for my late winter attack of impatience, because it get’s me out there every day, in anticipation of the first flower bud!

As always, Thanks for stopping by!

    Barb –

I certainly can’t wait for Spring after weeks of Arctic blast temperatures here in Virginia! As always, love your posts. 😊

    1. I agree with your assessment of the seasons! Well, I could take a week of summer, especially if it’s too hot. But overall my fav is Spring (this time of year)! Then in summer, I cant wait until Autumn. Hahahah! Thanks for sharing your favorite season, and for the comments!

  4. Oh, I can identify with that feeling of not having to watch every step for rattlesnakes! I like your side notes on your sketch about the signs of spring. I would absolutely love to see wild horses — have you ever seen them? Our winter has been “spring-y” this year and our frog chorus started last week! I’m not ruling out snow just yet, as we’ve had snow cover the poor blooming daffodils in March in the past! Happy hiking! (I hope those flickers have calmed down with drilling your house? Fingers crossed!)

    1. Karen! Love your comments and little notes about our signs of spring. Yes, we’ve see the wild horses quite a bit in the open space; even a foal or two. We seem to just missing them lately. Would love to have noisy frogs anytime in our high desert environment …. But, you know, we do live in a desert. Used to love listening to them in NC. But now, we listen closely for rattlesnake rattles! Ha!
Looks like we’re getting more snow on Friday, but sure have been enjoying spring-like temps. Didn’t even freeze last night. Hope you guys are beyond snow events, if for no other reason than to give your daffodils reason to sing!
Flickers are cruising by the house in huge flocks. One even bulleted into a bedroom window. Was able to pick him up, give him a stern warning while he recovered, then set him free. Off he cruised, to the north. (No new holes in the house) keep your fingers crossed!
